Short dictations are helpful for both listening and writing practice. Each of these beginning level dictations focuses on a specific learning point such as 'at the restaurant' or 'comparisons'. The dictations include five sentences. Each sentence is read twice with time to write down the answer.

The British said, “I really miss England; I want to call England and see how everybody is doing there.”
He called and talked for about 5 minutes and then asked the Devil, “well, how much do I owe you for the phone call?”
The Devil answered, “Five million dollars.”
“Five million dollars?!” the British man exclaimed.
He wrote him a check and went to sit back on his chair.


The American was so jealous; he started screaming, “me, too I want to call the United States, I want to see how everybody is doing.”
He called his country, and talked for about 10 minutes, and then asked the Devil, “Well, how much do I owe you for the phone call?”
The Devil answered, “Ten million dollars.”
“Ten million dollars?!” the American man exclaimed.
He wrote him a check and went to sit back on his chair.


The Iranian was extremely jealous, too.
He started screaming and screaming, “I want to call Iran too, I want to see how everybody is doing there too.”
He called Iran and talked for about twenty hours.
He was talking and talking and talking
Then he asked the Devil, “well, how much do I owe you for the phone call?”
The Devil answered, “One dollar.”

“ONLY ONE DOLLAR?!” the Briton exclaimed.
The Devil answered, “Yes, from hell to hell; it's local!”
